Bookouture re-sign more of your favourite thriller authors

We are thrilled to share that we have re-signed contracts with even more of your favourite thriller authors.

We’re mega-excited to share that we have signed a four-book mystery series with bestselling author Kerry Wilkinson. Associate Publisher Ellen Gleeson acquired World All Languages rights direct from the author in a four-book deal, bringing Kerry’s total titles with Bookouture up to 39. Set in the fictional coastal town of Whitecliff, the atmospheric, character-led amateur sleuth series will publish in quick succession from January 2023.

Ellen said,

‘Working with Kerry is incredibly rewarding and exciting as an editor, because he is quite literally brimming with ideas. Only a few weeks will go by, and he’ll have written another twisty, addictive, and somehow perfectly-plotted novel. I’ll never know how he does it, but the Whitecliff series has it all: properly shocking plot twists, wry and witty observations about small-town life, and a duo of mystery-solving sleuths whose unlikely friendship is a delight to witness. I know Kerry’s legion of fans will be thrilled to see him return to series writing, and I know his sharp commercial writing instincts combined with Bookouture’s nimble digital publishing will spell success for Whitecliff.’

Kerry said,

‘I’m excited to launch my first new series in six years – and my first original one with Bookouture. I’ve wanted to do a non-police mystery series for a long time and, though four books in four months is quite the start, we’ve been planning this for a while.’

We’re also thrilled to share that we will be publishing three more books from bestseller M.M. Chouinard. Publishing Executive Rhianna Louise acquired World All Language rights for the next instalments in the Detective Jo Fournier series. Book six will publish later this year, and the following two books will publish in 2023.

Rhianna says,

‘M.M. Chouinard’s crime series is utterly nail-biting and addictive with fantastic characters that benefit from her expertise in psychology. I know readers will be clamouring for more from Detective Jo Fournier after the publication of Her Silent Prayer on 7th April! The next three books are going to be absolute knockouts, with terrifying serial killers, shocking twists and some really exciting developments in Jo’s life. I can’t wait to work on them and to get them into the hands of new readers and loyal fans alike!’

M.M. Chouinard says,

‘I am beyond excited to write three more Jo Fournier books, and I’m even more excited to be working on them with Rhianna. She really vibes with the series and Jo, and brings so much to the table.’

Bookouture sign Ukrainian-American author, translator, and freelance writer Tetyana Denford

We are totally thrilled to announce that Commissioning Editor Rhianna Louise has acquired World rights for two gripping and deeply moving historical family sagas by Ukrainian-American author, translator, and freelance writer Tetyana Denford.

Previously self-published under the title Motherland, the first book will publish in July 2022 and tells the incredible story of Tetyana’s grandparents, who fled Ukraine during World War Two and travelled across the world, making utterly heart-wrenching choices along the way. The second book, which will publish in 2023 will recount another epic story from Tetyana’s family, demonstrating immense strength and love amid the devastating impact of war and its impact through generations.

Rhianna said,

‘I am beyond thrilled to be working with Tetyana, an immensely talented storyteller with rich and emotive writing. Motherland is a piercing, heart-wrenching novel and it is a real honour to be able to bring it to the widest possible readership. I can’t wait to publish it in July, and I am so excited for many more powerful novels from Tetyana that give voice to real stories from history with immense relevance for us today.’

Tetyana said,

‘I’ve spoken to so many people in the industry over the years, and for me, Bookouture has the model that inspires me so much: they push the future of book publishing in an innovative and collaborative way. I was inspired by how they approached Motherland in such an important way, and I honestly can’t wait to see what future possibilities lie ahead with this team—not just with my own books being in the hands of so many readers, but for stories like these to make a wider impact around the world. I think people crave learning about things that resonate on not only a personal level, but a cultural one too, now more than ever. Bookouture is the perfect home for stories to have this kind of resonance.’

I can’t wait to publish A Secret in the Family later this year.’

Leah said,

Bookouture announces promotions and expansion

We’re mega-excited to share that Bookouture has made a number of promotions and hires within its editorial team, to consolidate the commercial fiction list at the same time as expanding into new areas.

Christina Demosthenous is promoted to Publishing Director. Demosthenous joined Bookouture as Commissioning Editor in 2017, and was promoted to Associate Publisher in 2019. She has built up a list of bestsellers across a range of genres, with standout hits including Nicole Trope’s The Boy in the Photo, Sophie Ranald’s Sorry Not Sorry, Ellie Midwood’s The Girl Who Escaped from Auschwitz and Rita Herron’s Detective Ellie Reeves series. In her new role, she will have an additional remit looking after IP creation and content for Bookouture, as well as greater input into copywriting across Bookouture’s editorial team.

Demosthenous continues to report to Ruth Tross who is promoted to Publisher. Tross has been with Bookouture since 2019 and has published a list of bestsellers including S.E. Lynes’ number 1 bestseller The Housewarming and Clare Chase’s Eve Mallow series. In her new role as Publisher, in addition to continuing to manage one of Bookouture’s four fiction editorial teams, she will also oversee the creation of a new Science Fiction and Fantasy imprint, with more news about launch plans coming soon. Tross will continue to report to Bookouture MD Jenny Geras.

Peta Nightingale, Contracts, Rights and Translations Director, set up and launched Bookouture Deutschland last year, publishing translations of existing authors direct into the German market. Louisa Pagel will join her team in June as Publishing Manager. Pagel has been with Ullstein in Germany for the past eight years, and is currently an Editorial Director overseeing three commercial fiction lists. Based full-time in Berlin, she will report to Peta Nightingale, and manage scheduling and publishing across the Bookouture Deutschland list.

Nightingale said,

‘Louisa’s brilliant commercial eye, and knowledge and experience of the digital landscape for genre fiction in Germany will be invaluable as we expand our German project.’ Levke Kluge also joins the German publishing team as Editorial Assistant. Based in London, she will be starting later in April.’

Jenny Geras said,

‘I’m thrilled to congratulate Ruth and Christina on their promotions, which couldn’t be more deserved. They have both been critical to the incredible success and growth of Bookouture in the last five years, and I know they will continue to do great things for our commercial fiction list. And I couldn’t be more excited to have Louisa and Levke joining us. Peta Nightingale and her team have already achieved so much since we launched Bookouture Deutschland in the autumn of last year, and the growth of the team at this point enables us to ramp up the pace of growth in the German market.’

The Bookouture editorial team has also welcomed two more new starters recently. Iulia Teodorescu has joined team 5 as a publishing executive, and will also support Alba with all things audio. Iulia joined us from science fiction and fantasy startup, Heroic, where she assisted across the entire list; she has also worked as a foreign rights intern for The Quarto Group.

Lastly, Mandy Kullar has joined us in the new role of Production and Operations Assistant. Mandy came to us from the House of Commons where she was working in team services, but she also has a background in media and animations. We are very excited to have her in the Bookouture team where she supports both Chris Lucraft in Operations, and Alex Holmes, our Editorial Manager. Mandy’s brilliant data management skills are already proving to be a great asset!

Bookouture sign two psychological thrillers from cookery writer Amy Sheppard

Bookouture is delighted to announce they have signed two psychological thrillers from the highly regarded cookery writer Amy Sheppard, marking her fiction debut. The first book, The Beach Party, will publish in August 2022. Associate Publisher Lydia Vassar-Smith acquired World English Language rights from agent Clare Hulton.

Lydia said,

‘As soon as I started reading The Beach Party, I knew it was something special. Amy’s writing swept me down to Cornwall and took me on a dark journey, desperate to discover what had happened to the seventeen-year-old girl who never came home from the party. Fans of C.L. Taylor, Lucy Foley and T.M. Logan will be hooked on Amy’s writing.’

Amy said,

‘I knew within five minutes of speaking to Lydia that I wanted her to edit my books! Lydia just “got it” straightaway – who the characters really were and the stories I wanted to tell. I love the way Bookouture work. They’re passionate and dynamic and I’m so excited to be one of their authors.’

The acquisition marks Amy’s move from non-fiction to fiction. She explains, ‘I’ve been writing recipes and cookbooks for six years and have been so lucky to be part of such a supportive foodie community – building up a following of over 60k. I really enjoy the technical process of non-fiction. I get to share the food I love and in turn some of myself. Writing fiction is so different. You have total freedom. I became fully immersed in the characters – their loves, their lives… their homes. Storytelling has been an absolute joy.’

Bookouture sign three historical novels by Elaine Johns

Associate Publisher Ellen Gleeson has acquired World English rights, plus audio, for three World War Two-set novels by Elaine Johns. The deal was agreed with agent Judith Murdoch of Judith Murdoch Literary Agency. The first two novels, both set in Cornwall and London, will publish in summer 2022 with a third to follow in 2023.

Ellen said,

‘Elaine’s evocative descriptions of the wild Cornish coast is what drew me to her initial submission – and I soon totally fell for the gutsy characters, rich historical details, and epic romances that I’m already coming to recognise as Elaine’s hallmarks. Working with Elaine so far has been a joyous process, and it’s clear she knows exactly what readers want. I can’t wait to share these gorgeous books with the world!’

Elaine said,

‘I’m so excited to be part of the Bookouture family and to share my character Maddie with readers. Writing is sometimes a solitary business, and when a book is finished only then does it have life breathed into it. Firstly, by someone like Ellen, a sensitive and enthusiastic editor and then, most importantly, by the reader. So, thank you reader, whoever you may be, for making this a two-way-street and reading my book, bringing it to life. Thanks Ellen, you’re a star.’

Bookouture sign three more historical novels from Lucyk-Berger

We’re delighted to announce that we have contracted three new historical fiction novels from Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger. Chrystyna said,

‘The process for coming up with this series was so much fun. I batted possible ideas back and forth with multiple editors at Bookouture until something so solid took hold that we knew these characters would need more than one book to have a good run. Again, I’m working with fictional characters inspired by real historical figures that few readers may have heard about. With Jess’ firm commitment to this series, and the excitement from the whole team at Bookouture, I am really looking forward to introducing these new characters, these new adventures, and sharing another fresh perspective in WWII historical fiction!’

We are also very proud to be publishing a new edition of Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger’s Souvenirs from Kyiv, a book of stories inspired by the author’s Ukrainian family history during the Second World War.
