Bookouture publish 500th title

We are absolutely delighted and as proud as punch to announce that today we publish our 500th Bookouture title!

Our 500th publication is Blood Broken by Lindsay J. Pryor. Blood Broken the finale in the Blackthorn series combines sizzling passion with a dark, complex and dangerous dystopian world. Readers around the globe have been eagerly awaiting the final instalment in this bestselling series.

Square Graphic - Blood Broken - 1

Blood Shadows, which was the first book in the Blackthorn series, was also the VERY FIRST title that Bookouture published way back in November 2012.

What a fabulous way to celebrate our 500th book. Congratulations to everyone who has been part of this amazing journey.

Founder and CEO Oliver Rhodes said,

I am very proud to have published Blood Shadows as Bookouture’s first book and it seems fitting that Blood Broken should be our five hundredth, six-and-a-half years later. Bookouture has grown quickly over that time – from a one-person start-up to a team of twenty six, with over twenty-five million copies sold. At the heart of everything though has always been great story-telling and the Blackthorn series is a brilliant example of that. Having already read my copy of Blood Broken, I know that readers are set for a thrilling finale.

Please do join in the celebrations over on Facebook and Twitter.

Karen said,

I’m so delighted to be published by Bookouture again. Isobel is a fantastic editor to work with, her enthusiasm for my ideas is so encouraging and her editorial advice is always spot on. I’m particularly delighted to be setting another Christmas book in Cornwall, a place that is so close to my heart, and to explore the special mother-daughter relationship that is at the heart of my novel. I hope that readers enjoy it as much as they enjoyed Snowy Nights at the Lonely Hearts Hotel.

Christina said,

It has been such a thrill publishing Sorry Not Sorry, which has been a runaway bestseller for us ever since it published. Sophie’s writing is smart, sassy and makes me spit out my tea with laughter whenever I’m editing it, and I cannot wait to blow away her fans with more fantastic books.

Sophie said,

Working with Bookouture over the past 12 months has been an absolute delight. The support I’ve received from Christina and the rest of the team has been amazing, and the strong sales of Sorry Not Sorry are testament to their hard work and expert knowledge of the market. Drew’s writing is hilarious, heartfelt, and utterly unique. His high-concept novels have won over his fans with their delightful quirkiness, and I cannot wait to unleash these gorgeous gems to the world!

Drew said,

Wow, what can I say – just to be nominated is such an honour, but to win… What? I didn’t win an award? I don’t know, most enthusiastic newcomer or something? Oh I see, the announcement! Where to begin? Christina is one of the smartest people I’ve ever had the privilege of working with. The team at Bookouture is an author’s dream. I can’t wait to write my next two books – and maybe, just maybe, I’ll win an award for most enthusiastic newcomer one day after all!

New role for Claire Bord at Bookouture; Ruth Tross to join from Hodder

We have some VERY exciting news to share with you today.

Claire Bord will take on a new role at Bookouture from May, focusing on new areas of publishing for the company – including commissioning the first non-fiction titles for the list.

Oliver Rhodes, CEO of Bookouture said of the move,

Having played a fundamentally important role in growing Bookouture from a small start-up to one of the leading digital publishers, Claire has a brilliant insight into what it takes to establish a new digitally focused list. As we look to diversify our publishing, I find it really exciting that Claire will have the opportunity to do this again – operating in an entrepreneurial role where I know she will add enormous value.

Bord will continue to publish her current list of fiction authors which includes the multi-million bestselling author Angela Marsons and keep her title of Publisher. She will also remain a key member of the Bookouture management team.

Bord commented,

I will always be a passionate fiction editor and to be able to complement that with my love of non-fiction is an amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to build on the phenomenal success we’ve achieved at Bookouture by branching out into an area of the market we don’t currently occupy, and expanding our readership even further.

Also in May, Ruth Tross will join Bookouture from Hodder, where she will take up the role of Publishing Director, heading up the editorial team which currently reports into Bord.

Tross started her publishing career at Sceptre. In 2011 she launched the Mulholland crime list at Hodder & Stoughton and in 2017 became Hodder’s crime and thriller publisher. She has worked on international bestsellers Jeffery Deaver and Yrsa Sigurdardottir, Sunday Times bestsellers and Richard & Judy picks Sabine Durrant and Erin Kelly, digital hits Sarah Alderson and David Mark, and classics including Leslie Charteris and Dorothy L Sayers.

In her new role, Tross will report to Publisher Jenny Geras who said of the appointment,

I am over the moon to have Ruth joining us at Bookouture. Her reputation in the industry is rightly outstanding – combining list management and team leadership with a track record of publishing both physical and digital bestsellers. I know she will do a brilliant job of leading the team here, and in growing her own list.

Ruth Tross said,

I will miss Hodder immensely – I started as an editorial assistant there, and everything I know I’ve learnt from my wonderful authors and colleagues along the way. But there are always new things to discover and I am very excited to be joining an innovative and impressive company that publishes very differently, at a key moment in its expansion.

Please do join in the celebrations on Facebook and Twitter.

I’m excited to write her as well as a host of other new characters – particularly Detective Inspector Dan Lockhart, an ex-soldier who’s trying to come to terms with his wife’s disappearance… though he’s the only one who believes she’s still alive.

Commissioning Editor Christina Demosthenous has acquired World English Language rights for two new psychological thrillers by Lesley Sanderson, from Hayley Steed at Madeleine Milburn Literary Agency. The first book will be published in November 2019, followed by a second book in April 2020.

In more great news, we’re delighted to tell you that we’ll be bringing you more fabulous books from authors Pam Howes, Lizzie Page and Shirley Dickson.

Commissioning Editor Abigail Fenton has acquired World all language rights in a fourth Lark Lane book plus a new Liverpool saga trilogy from bestselling author Pam Howes. The Midwives of Lark Lane will publish in December 2019, followed by The Girls of Liberty Street, book 1 of the Bryant Sisters trilogy, in June 2020.

Abigail Fenton said of the deal,

The reaction to Pam’s Lark Lane series has been fantastic, and I’m so thrilled that there will be a fourth instalment to follow Cathy and Alice’s journey further; I know Pam’s fans will be overjoyed to have more of their story. Pam’s skill at bringing wartime Liverpool to life is unparalleled, and The Girls of Liberty Street kicks off what promises to be Pam’s best series yet. Following three friends through the forties, full of heartbreak, friendship, joy and hope, the series will be top of every saga fans to-read list.

Pam Howes said,

I am absolutely thrilled to bits to be continuing writing sagas for Bookouture. I have had such a fabulous response from my lovely readers for the Mersey Trilogy and the Lark Lane series and am enjoying planning and plotting stories for my new characters, once more set in my favourite city of Liverpool and surrounding suburbs. I’m really looking forward to working with the Bookouture team again and especially my patient and supportive editorial team: Abi, Natasha and Ellen.

Associate Publisher Kathryn Taussig has also acquired World English rights from Thérèse Coen at Hardman and Swainson for two new novels from Lizzie Page. Publishing in 2020, these new novels – like Lizzie’s previous writing for Bookouture – will be set in wartime Britain and are inspired by the incredible true stories of real people who served.

Lizzie Page says,

I’m absolutely thrilled to be signing for two more books with Bookouture. Kathryn is a fabulous editor and it’s a huge pleasure to work with her. Kathryn helped turn the War Nurses trilogy into something very wonderful and I can’t wait to see what we do with the next two books. There will be women overcoming adversity in a war-time situation (inspired by real-life heroines), there will be difficult relationships, and there will also be some surprises on the way too.

Kathryn Taussig says,

There’s something very special about Lizzie’s writing, which takes the events we read about in history books and makes them utterly personal and human. Her characters are nuanced and genuine, and Lizzie shows real compassion for them – for this reason her books are always very moving. I am so looking forward to working on more novels together – they’re going to be brilliant!

I’m thrilled to sign this new contact with Bookouture. The entire team has been a joy to deal with and I can’t wait to work with my editor, Kathryn Taussig, on the next books in the Tara Thorpe series.

Kathryn Taussig said,

Clare’s writing is so very atmospheric and she’s done a brilliant job of developing her main characters over the course of the series. Every new book brings fresh surprises, readers will be thrilled and astounded by how the drama plays out in these next few books, both inside the police station and on the trail of some very twisty and suspenseful mysteries.
